Máriahalom

The charming little village lies between the hills of Gerecse to the east, next to Tinnye, Perbál and Gyermely. The tiny village is not only unique in the country for its location and attractions, but also for its organic village, a paradise idyll that is very popular with those who seek peace and quiet. The site of the settlement was inhabited as early as the Bronze Age, according to the evidence of artefacts. The first written record dates back to the 1200s, although it has only been known as Máriahalom since 1936 in honour of the Virgin Mary. The village’s architectural attractions include a Roman Catholic church in late Baroque style, a Turkish well dug by the Turks, and a vineyard cellar where delicious local wines are served. Some of the inhabitants of Máriahalom decided many years ago to take a big step towards nature and create an organic village on the western side of the village, on the Eifel side.
