The entrance to the Hermit’s Cave is best seen from the height of Visegrad Castle. There are no hiking trails up the steep, rocky side of the St. Michael’s Hill overlooking the Danube, making it a risky venture even in dry weather. A safe hiking trail leads up the mountain from the railway station in Nagymaros. Starting on the yellow signpost, you first have to overcome a steep climb, then take the Panorama road and the Kittenberger road to reach the yellow cave sign. This will take you down to the caves. Only a small part of these caves are of natural origin. Their dimensions and shapes, which you can see now, have been obtained by artificial alterations, by carving the rock, some of which date back to Roman times. The rocky ridge rising above the level of the Danube was an ideal site for the construction of a Roman watchtower. In the Middle Ages, a rock chapel or cave monastery was probably built on the caves. You can see a small fragment of the remains of the building near the entrance. The interior of the cave has a primitive basilica layout, with a small sanctuary enclosing the right ‘side nave’.
