After the defeat at the Battle of Mohács (29 August 1526), the Turkish armies that were storming the country met their greatest resistance in the area of the settlement of Marót, located in the forests of Gerecse, which ended in bloodshed. This terrible massacre is commemorated by a monument made by the sculptor György Kovács of Fertõdhomok. Pusztamarót itself is one of the important tourist hotspots along the National Blue Trail.
