Memorial Room of Vilmos Csontos

Zalaba

Although Vilmos Csontos (1908-2000) was not born in Zalaba, but in nearby Garamsallo, he lived and worked in this village from 1948 until his death. He was a poet with a distinctive voice and a well-known representative of Hungarian literature in Slovakia. The defining and constant motif of his poetry is his love for his native land and his commitment to the peasant-worker way of life. As Vilmos Csontos was a master carpenter by trade, he made most of the furniture himself, some of which can be seen in the memorial room. The author’s books, manuscripts, volumes and correspondence are also on display. In addition to the furniture, the house also houses ethnographic objects of the period, the poet’s old bicycle and paintings depicting cultural events in the village.
