Márianosztra

The name of the village conjures up images of a prison, a Marian shrine or a place of pilgrimage, but this village in the Börzsön region is also a place of mining history. One thing is for sure: Márianosztra itself is history surrounded by mountains, with many attractions. The Márianosztra Prison and Penitentiary is a landmark in the village’s landscape: although it is not open to the public, its exhibition room offers a glimpse of prison life and the past and present of the Pauline monks. King Louis I built a monastery and church for the order, using stones from a nearby ruined castle, and had it consecrated in honour of the Virgin Mary. From that time onwards, we can speak of the name “Maria Nostra”, which means Our Lady. On the eastern outskirts of the village is the Calvary Hill with its magnificent views. The chapel was built on its top in 1777 and has since become a place of pilgrimage for the faithful, and is also crossed by the Marian pilgrimage route.
