Ipolytölgyes

The Ipoly valley has a very special atmosphere: the people are helpful, the water is clear and wild; in many places it becomes fast and exciting, in others it slows down and becomes bathing. Ipolytölgyes is a quiet little village at the foot of the Börzsöny, on the banks of the aforementioned Ipoly river, and it is also a major starting point for many water tours, with its new rowing harbour. The river and the streams that flow into it provided an excellent opportunity – in the Middle Ages – to build water-powered mills: the Egyeg mill is now a boarding house, but the ruins of the Cserge mill can still be visited today, and are well worth a break in the beautiful natural surroundings. The village church has several interesting features: it stands on the edge of the village, not even at its highest point; its spire is not above the entrance; and the original cross on the spire, which fell in 1986, can be touched in the churchyard.
