Annavölgy is situated in the northern part of Transdanubia, in Komárom – Esztergom county, at the foothills of the Gerecse mountain range, in the valley of the Nagy Gete mountain and the Hegyes stone. The name of the settlement is so closely linked to mining that its history is inseparable from it. Coal mining first began here in 1795 in the Dorg coal basin, but the activity was made impossible in 1970 by water intrusion. Since then, the Annavölgy has become a resort village, and a salt cave is being built in the former mine workings to treat respiratory diseases by inhalation of saline solution. Mining monuments and memorials can be found in many places in the village, and a mining theme park is planned.
