Bajna

Bajna was already inhabited in Roman times. Its favourable geographical location makes it a popular destination for hiking, cycling, horse riding, fishing and hunting. The highest mountains in the area, Gerecse (635 m) and Pisznice (557 m), are only a few minutes’ easy walk away. The most famous native of the village is the ‘Devil’s Knight’, Móric Sándor, famous throughout Europe. In the 19th century, the count commissioned the most renowned architect of the time, Joseph Hild, to convert the hunting lodge, built around 1720, into a 59-room castle. Today, after decades of neglect and an award-winning renovation, the Sándor-Metternich Castle is finally reborn in 2021, with an exterior worthy of an outstanding work of Hungarian classicist architecture.
