Bajtava (Bajta)

Located on the western side of the Helembai Mountains, in the valley of the Bajtai stream, almost half of the settlement is covered by forest. The natural environment is accordingly magnificent: the landscape is suitable for hiking of varying lengths and terrain. For those who want a short hike with a unique atmosphere, there is a trail with a unique view along the volcanic mountain range of the Danube and the Ipoly, on the edge of the Kovácspataki rocks, a characteristic mountain range of the Danube and the Ipoly. This small village of just 400 inhabitants is mentioned in documents as early as 1261, under the name Villa Boyta. Its Roman Catholic church, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, was built in the second half of the 18th century and rebuilt in 1872 in neoclassical style. Even András Vályi wrote at the end of the 18th century that ‘the hills of vines produce good wine’. And if he wrote this, he was right, because the wines of this region are still popular with visitors today.
