Kamenín (Kéménd)

The geographical characteristics of Chemend are very good: it is an excellent area for cereals and grapes. Its cellars, aptly named Iszomfalva (Iszom Village), are characterised by the fact that they retain the appearance of a hundred years ago, not only in their individual segments but also in their streetscapes. The village is bisected by the river Garam, and its Szerelem Island is still a popular stopover for water hikers and nature lovers. South of the village is the nature reserve “Sósok”, where grey cattle graze and mangalica cattle roam the land – their high quality organic meat is a rarity in Europe. Chemend is the centre of the six villages with short skirts in the Lower Garam: its distinctive women’s dress – the short skirt – is unique, worn only in these six villages and still worn today. According to legend, the Pasha of Esztergom ordered women to wear short skirts so that he could admire their knees while they were turning around at the fair. Thanks to the enthusiastic traditionalists, all the preserved garments and other legacies can be seen in the town’s very rich country house.
