Nagybörzsöny

Nagybörzsöny is a settlement with a rich history, which still preserves its traditions and traditional crafts. In addition to its many listed buildings, it has a wide range of exhibitions, interactive workshops and local products (jam and syrup making, basket weaving, carpet weaving). It is difficult to list its diversity: besides its Árpád-era monumental church, the Roman Catholic Church of St. Stephen the King, which is a rarity in Hungary, and the still functioning milling monument, the Antal water mill, there is, among others, the Mining Church, the Mining Museum and the Country House, a woodcarving and fairy-tale ceramics exhibition, a woodcarving workshop, and the B. András Szabó painter’s exhibition in the Main Square. From Nagybörzsöny there are seven signposted hiking trails leading to the interior of Börzsöny, most of which offer magnificent panoramic views. The trans-Börzsöny railway is today one of Hungary’s most spectacular mountain railways, winding 22 kilometres through dense forest along narrow streambeds between Szob and Nagybörzsöny.
