The Basilica of Esztergom Castle Hill is the largest church in Hungary and the main cathedral of the Hungarian Catholic Church. The most beautiful view of this masterpiece of Hungarian classicism is from the Mária Valéria bridge over the Danube. The church on the hilltop and the medieval castle next to it are the dominant landmarks of the Danube bend. King St Stephen built the first cathedral dedicated to St Adalbert on Várdomb. The turbulent centuries witnessed the construction and demolition of three more cathedrals after the first burnt down. The 19th century saw the major construction of the basilica that still stands today. Work began in 1822, based on the plans of József Hild, and was completed in 1869 with the laying of the capstone. The dimensions of the main cathedral are truly impressive: 118 m long, 49 m wide and 100 m high from the altar to the top of the cross of the dome. Its towers are 57 m high, the columns of the narthex 22 m high. The monumental façade of the entrance hall, facing St. Stephen’s Square, has a tympanum of 8 Corinthian columns. The basilica can be bypassed in its entirety, and the terrace overlooking the Danube offers a magnificent view of the city and the Danube.
