On the western border of Nyergesújfalu, overlooking the Danube, stands the Sánc hill, whose good location was exploited by the Romans. In Roman times, a limes fortress called Crumerum was built here, the Danube was the border river. The Sánc hill also played an important role in the Rákóczi War of Independence: the troops of Ferenc Rákóczi II built a fortress on the hilltop, but it was soon captured by the outnumbered imperial troops led by Count János Pálffy and Count Guido Starhemberg. The Millennium Monument and the memorials to the heroes and victims of the Second World War and the 1956 Revolution can also be visited on the hill, where a headstone to the heroes of 1956 has been erected.
