Chľaba (Helemba)

While the unique beauty of the Danube Bend hardly needs to be explained to hikers, the Helembai Mountains with their unique microclimate are not yet known to everyone. The southernmost and lowest mountain range in Slovakia is also known as the “Börzsöny”, the “separated Börzsöny”. Active tourism is popular, with hiking in the mountains and cycling around them, while the rivers are popular with anglers and water sports enthusiasts. In addition to its favourable natural conditions, its cultural roots are also significant: the remains of small towers have been excavated in the town and its outskirts, all part of the gigantic Roman defensive line, the Limes Romanus. Helemba also has a number of sacral monuments, large and small. Their first church, built in Romanesque style, was destroyed, but the remains of the foundations have been found. In 2010, the village community built a rock cave next to its late Baroque Roman Catholic church in memory of the vision of the Virgin Mary of Lourdes. There is also a wealth of monuments, chapels, corpus and statues.
