Dömös

Dömös

Dömös is a popular hiking destination in the Danube bend, the gentle beauty of the landscape itself already fascinated the kings of the Árpád dynasty. The name of the settlement first appears in a document of King Saint László in 1079, and in the 11th century there was already a royal mansion here. In the 12th century, Prince Álmos founded a priory and a chapter in Dömös, which was destroyed during the Turkish wars; its ruins were scattered in the 18th century, but in the 20th century the remaining foundation walls of the church were excavated and the recently reconstructed lower church was opened to tourists as a real curiosity. The town’s restored industrial monument, a more than a century old boat station, offers scheduled services to several major destinations in the Danube Bend. Dömös and its surroundings cater for all hikers’ needs: easy access to Dobogókõ, the Rám Gorge with its waterfalls and the lookout of the Preaching Chair, from where you can enjoy perhaps the most beautiful panorama of the Danube Bend.
