Gbelce (Köbölkút)

Köbölkút is a place worth looking for, because you might not get the point at first. Because of its location – about halfway between Érsekújvár and Párkány – it has not only been a route for armies over the centuries, but also served as a trade route. In 1021, King St Stephen ordered a well the size of a cubic metre to be dug to cope with the drought. Since the village takes its name from this well, it is still visible in the now restored central square in the form of a stylised period heron well. A natural attraction is the Parisian Marshes, with its unique flora and fauna and an observation tower for exploration. The artificially created reed-covered site was declared a nature reserve in 1966; its birdlife is particularly interesting. The south-facing slopes of the hills to the north-east of the village are ideal for growing grapes; it is one of the municipalities with the largest area of vineyards in the country. This is confirmed by the large number of wine cellars: there are about 300 of them on the vineyard.
