Nagymaros

Nagymaros is considered one of the most beautiful villages in the country, which is no wonder: it lies on the banks of the Danube, at the foot of the Börzsöny, and its entire area offers a magical view of the Visegrád Citadel. In addition to the panoramic view, the cultivated promenade along the Danube offers visitors a sculpture park, a playground, pastry shops and buffets and restaurants. The area around the town is almost criss-crossed by hiking and cycling trails, so it’s worth getting out and about, as the cycle path along the northern bank of the Danube Bend, the National Blue Route and other hiking trails offer active tourists a wealth of experiences. The Julianus Lookout, the Turkish Field Trail, the Chestnut Tree Trail and the Hermit Caves cater for all levels of difficulty. Many people don’t know that there is a 550-metre-long public tunnel under the Danube between Visegrád and Nagymaros, which can be visited twice a year in an organised tour. Nagymaros was also the home of two famous people: Kálmán Kittenberger, an African explorer, hunter and zoologist, and the Italian-born painter Pállya Celestin, whose memory is well remembered in the village.
