Pilismarót

The area around this still popular tourist resort was once a favourite holiday resort of King Matthias, and it was here, in the Heckenast Castle (unfortunately not open to the public), that Ferenc Deák wrote the text of the Compromise. Thanks to archaeological excavations, we know that the history of the village dates back to prehistoric times: numerous finds have been found in the outskirts of the village, including the remains of a cemetery, a church and a watchtower, Bronze Age monuments and the remains of the Castra ad Herculem fortress. The area offers excellent opportunities for hiking and hunting, but it is also home to one of the most beautiful beaches on this stretch of the Danube, known as the “Silver Coast of the Danube”. A good part of the area is part of the Pils Landscape Protection Area, with beautiful hiking trails accessible from the village. Perhaps the best known of these is the Hoffman hut, a long-time favourite destination for tourists on boots, or Dobogókõ, the Hirsch hut and the Iron Gate.
