Tokodaltáró

The prefix of the settlement’s name is named after a warrior named Tokod, according to the surviving traditions, and the suffix of its name refers to the mining that took place here. The settlement, which was built on coal mining, now boasts a water mine, which supplies the area with high quality karst water. Their local history exhibition hall is located in the Miners’ Cultural Centre. The strategic importance of the site was recognised at an early stage: in ancient times there was a large late Roman camp (castrum), the remains of which can still be visited today. The remains of pottery kilns, glass and metal melting furnaces found here also prove that the coal found here was already used by the Romans. The settlement and its surroundings, situated in the Gerecse Mountains at the foot of the Gete, are a popular place for hiking: the Hegyes Hill above it offers a view of the western gateway to the Danube Bend and, on a clear day, of some of the volcanic mountains of the Highlands, as well as a clear view of the entire Gerecse ridge and floodplain. Visitors can also often enjoy the sight of grazing grey cattle gullies, now a rare sight.
