Vámosmikola

Situated between the Börzsöny Mountains and the Ipoly River, on a high ground less threatened by flooding, the interior and the border of the village have been inhabited for a long time. Vámosmikola’s main asset is its natural environment, but it also attracts tourists with its historic buildings, sculptures and other works of art, mostly dating from the heyday of the Hungarian Baroque. In the second half of the 18th century, the Esterházy family built the present Esterházy-Huszár mansion in Baroque style on the site, which is now a primary school. Culture-hungry tourists should not miss the renovated country house and the ethnographic collection housed here. It is a wonderful place to discover the ethnographic heritage and folklore of the people of the Ipoly region, with a wealth of utensils, tools and costumes. The Mykolárium, which is not only the home of four sunflower village guesthouses but also of the King St. Stephen Foundation, is always happy to offer cultural tours to visit the monuments and artistic treasures of the area. Other local attractions include the Baroque Roman Catholic church, the statue of Turul and the statue of St John Nepomuk.
