Short presentation Along the hiking trail from and back to the city, you can visit several viewpoints and built heritage sites. The jewel in the crown of the trail is the century-old Iron Gates Refuge and its terrace with unrivalled views.

ROUTES AND ROAD SIGNS TO FOLLOW,

From the Basilica, follow the signs for the green chapel (pedestal cross) and the blue Mary’s Way. Leaving the town and climbing up the ridge, the green chapel sign joins the red and green bar signs, among others, where you turn left and the Blue Maria Way follows the red sign up to the Iron Gate. Turn back here and follow the green signs up the ridge to the Esztergom boat station, where you will reach the other end of the green chapel signposted route, which you can follow back to the Basilica.

VARIATIONS OF THE TOUR

·         From the Iron Gate shelter, you can detour a few metres to a rocky cliff where you can enjoy a further panorama. Continue straight on past the house and follow the signs.

·         From the Iron Gate, the red lane leads directly to Esztergom railway station.

·         From the Iron Gate, you can take the red lane to Fári-kút, from where you can take the green lane or green cross back to the top of the hill.

·         In the centre of Esztergom, you can turn off the green sign to the right at Széchenyi tér or Kis-Duna promenade, so you can reach the Water Town or the Basilica along the platánsora of the Kis-Duna instead of the boat station.

·         In the city centre, after Rákóczi Square (Bástya department store), the yellow double arrows of the Hungarian Pilgrim’s Way lead back to the Basilica via St. Thomas Hill.
