The Roman province of Pannonia and the Roman Empire was bordered by the Danube. Along it, a chain of military camps and watchtowers was established, with installations to protect the empire from the middle of the 1st century AD to the first third of the 5th century AD. The archaeological remains of Dömös, on the Danube canyon side of the border, include two military brick kilns and three watchtowers dating from the Roman period. The Roman watchtower has recently been excavated and an exhibition of the results of the excavation has been opened in the Bálint Balassa Museum of the Hungarian National Museum in Esztergom.
