Pohronský Ruskov (Oroszka)

The settlement on the bends of the Garam river has been inhabited since before written history, according to archaeological finds. The village, with a population of nearly 1300, used to be a manufacturing stronghold of the southern part of the Highlands, with a mill, sugar factory and cannery. The mill still grinds and produces the best quality flour in Slovakia. The local community is very close-knit, as visitors can experience during events. The village has a unique and special private collection of military history, which can be visited daily from May to September. The museum’s founder, himself a master of arms, collects and exhibits the surviving artefacts of the First and especially the Second World War. In August each year, a large-scale war exhibition is held to commemorate the famous battle of the Garam in World War II. The town is also rich in natural treasures, with snowdrop fields in spring and interesting loess walls along the Garam, where you can also observe a rich bird life.
