Gastronomic tour of the Danube Region - Ister-Granum

Gastronomic tour of the Danube Region

I. Nyergesújfalu – Local farmers market

In our changing world, local communities and the protection of local values and products are increasingly important. Consumer behaviour has shifted towards quality. The origin of food is becoming more important, and so is the personal relationship with producers.

On our gastronomic adventure, we invite you to a local farmers’ market with a special atmosphere.

For many people in this village with a Swabian tradition, the stele is the shelving rack of a pantry full of things to offer. The market takes place in the courtyard of the old school building on Kossuth Lajos Street. Open every Wednesday from 4pm. to 6pm.

II. Piszkei Öko shop

We will continue our tour in the neighbouring village of Lábatlan, in the Piszkei Öko shop (bakery in Lábatlan, Rákóczi Ferenc street 182).

The Piszkei Öko shop offers Piszkei organic breads, organic bakery products and organic baking ingredients. The wide selection includes gluten-free, yeast-free, vegetarian and vegan products. If you’re just looking for a quality organic coffee, you’re still welcome!

You can order Piszkei organic breads and organic products on our website (http://www.piszkeioko.hu).

III. Ferry Neszmély – Radvaň nad Dunajom

In addition to the construction of border bridges and the EuroVelo 6 cycling route, the double-sided ferry port connecting Radvaň nad Dunajom has been completed. The project is scheduled for completion in June 2022.

The construction of the ferry will save nearly 40 km of road to Slovakia. The ferry will be able to transport 10 cars at a time and will also facilitate cycling and walking, as well as boosting tourist crossings.

IV. Radvaň nad Dunajom

Frigyes Bott – his vineyard is located on the southern side of the Muzla hills, which was the former vineyard of the Esztergom Basilica.  His winery’s long-standing desire is to restore the former splendour of the villages along the Hron, to become a wine region worthy of its potential, and even more: a tourist region where the three rivers Hron, Danube and Ipeľ meet.

To this end, it is essential to develop a gastronomic and tourist sector based on local ingredients, local labour and local traditions, in addition to wine.

Frigyes Bott

With our wines, we want to contribute to the discovery of our wine region, and Central Europe in a broader sense, by discerning wine consumers from all over the world as soon as possible, which is why we cultivate our grapes with a biodynamic approach and our wines are fermented spontaneously in wooden barrels and amphorae and then matured on the lees in the traditional way, without the addition of additives.

A natural wine is nothing more than the sum of many, many purified details – both in the vineyard and in the cellar. We place great emphasis on the traditional varieties of our wine region, such as furmint, lime, WalschRiesling, Juhfark, blue franc and cadarka, and of the world varieties, the emphasis is on RheinRiesling and pinot noir.

V. Búč

For the highlights of our culinary offer, we present the Karkó winery, winery, tavern and restaurant ( Restaurant & Pension Vintop Karkó, Búč, Slovakia, +421 905 275 2622, https://vintop-karko.eu/hu/etterem/)

In addition to producing grapes and fair wines, the Karkó winery also operates a main restaurant located above the winery. In summer they have a cosy terrace with a beautiful view over the landscape and the distant hills.

The cuisine is based on popular Hungarian dishes, with a few international and Slovakian favourites. They serve Hortobágy pancakes, Jókai bean soup, liver mushroom soup, bear’s onion cream soup, noodles with sheep’s cheese, Brasov pork tenderloin, roast duck legs, goose liver stuffed pork loin, roast pike-perch and trout, to name a few of the half a hundred or so dishes. For dessert, in addition to the somlói we ordered, they also offer a ‘totyogós apple cottage cheese with vanilla sauce’ and pancakes.

The wine list relies mainly on their own wines, which are not cathartic but enjoyable. We found the reds more convincing, especially the Merlot. They stock local craft beers and spirits.

Worth mentioning is the fairytale kitchen of Vintop Karkó Camp Resort, which provides a fabulous environment for children’s cooking programmes with the possibility of using modern kitchen utensils, while in the field of home culture it takes us back to the atmosphere of the kitchens of the old times.

VI. Mužla

A historic wine region in the geographical centre of the triangle enclosed by the rivers Hron and the Danube, 10 km west of Štúrovo and 40 km east of Komárno. The village is mainly known for its vineyards, so we invite you to visit the famous wineries of our culinary offer.

ZALABA Winery – Artisanal winery located in the village of Muzsla in southern Slovakia, covering an area of 6.4 ha. As it is well known, the hills near rivers Hron and Danube have excellent conditions for growing grapes and producing good wines, mainly due to the excellent soil quality and climatic conditions.

We welcome you, your friends or even your business partners to our winery, where good atmosphere and culinary experiences are guaranteed.

Whether it is a family or a company wine tasting, we can organise the entire event, including delivery or even additional services such as live music or a delicious Hungarian goulash at the Zalaba winery.

Árendás winery – Árendás Zsolt

Our winery is located in the Highlands, in Muzsla, one of the flagship vineyards of the South Slovakian Wine Region. The Árendás Winery is dedicated to producing artisan wines with a unique, distinctive and recognizable style, in which the varietal, the terroir and most of all the winemaker’s personality can be found as a trademark. The wines are made in a natural way, avoiding harsh oenological interventions and integrating modern innovations with the traditions of the vineyard and the family.

The range of wines is based on the trio of Green Veltelini, King’s Daughter, WelschRiesling, which are traditional in the wine region, complemented by Rhein Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon, Danube and Honey White varieties.

VII. House of Wines – Štúrovo

As the last station of our culinary adventure, we recommend the House of Wines in Štúrovo.

Wine shop, wine bar, wine tourism centre and wine school – all this and more can be found on the pedestrian street in  Štúrovo. Wine lovers can choose from the largest selection of wines from Hungarian winemakers in the Highlands, taste the daily specials, find out about wineries and wine events. The House of Wines also acts as a wine tourism information centre, where visitors are welcome to ask for advice on cellar tours, visiting a particular winemaker or cellar village.
